Border to Border Air Show in Douglas

The City of Douglas together with the historic Gadsden Hotel in Arizona, USA, are hosting the second annual Border to Border Air Show, which will take place at the Douglas Municipal Airport on 15 March 2008. The event will celebrate the 75th anniversary of the opening of Douglas Municipal Airport and everyone is invited to join in the fun and excitement. Entrance to the Border to Border Air Show is free to the public, with proceeds from various events benefiting the Cochise College Aviation Program.

The Douglas Municipal Airport was the first International Airport in the United States and had the honor of being dedicated in 1933 by First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt and Amelia Earhart, a record-setting American pioneer in the field of aviation. Both the Gadsden Hotel, which was established in 1907, and the Douglas Municipal Airport are recorded in the National Historic Registry of the United States.

Air Show Hall of Fame announcer Danny Clisham will be appearing at the Border to Border Airshow. Skilled pilots who spectators can expect to see include Warren and Kent Pietsch of Pietsch Airshows and Jim Peitz Aerosports, as well as representatives from the United States and Canadian military.

A pre-show celebration, “Meet the Pilots”, is planned for Friday March 14th at the Gadsden Hotel. The program for the Border to Border Air Show on Saturday 15 March promises to be packed with excitement, starting off with the carnival rides opening at noon. Visitors can enjoy the car show sponsored by Douglas Street Rods, featuring numerous beautifully restored cars mainly from the 1950s, as well as a display of motorbikes by Thunder Mountain HOG (Harley Owners Group).

The Border to Border Air Show is offering visitors an opportunity to experience the thrill of a flight in a “Barnstorming” era airplane. The pilots of these open-cockpit bi-planes will give their passengers a taste of what it was like to fly in an era considered by many to be the most exciting in aviation history. The Young Eagles program will be offering free airplane rides for kids (with their parents written consent).

Musical entertainment will continue throughout the day and the Hangar Dance with Craig Carter and the Spur of the Moment Band will round off the day’s festivities. The Border to Border Air Show promises to be a spectacular event that aviation enthusiasts would not want to miss.
