Hi,
I'm just recently toying with the idea of getting my pilots license.. I live in the Silicon Valley currently, but absolutely hate living in the city... But thats where the money is for what I do. I am thinking of getting my license, and buying a plane, so that I can live elsewhere, and fly into the city a couple times a week. Is it legal to put a 3000 foot piece of asphalt on your property, to takeoff from and land on it? (I realize the technical part is more complicated than that, but thats the jist of what I want to do).. What are the FAA's rules on that? Like I said, I don't have a license right now, so I don't know any of the FAA's regulations. If anyone has any info on this, it would be greatly appreciated. If its not possible to have an 'unregistered' runway.. What are the costs/requirements for building my own small, private airport? Thanks for your time! |

Muck, yes it is possible to build a private runway. There is a FAR that covers this but I will have to look it up. It will depend on where you are wanting to put the runway. Look on a Sectional chart and count all of the private airports on it. That should answer the question, CAN I ? It's just a hasle to get it done

Private runway
A three thousand foot paved runway? What type of aircraft are you thinking about? It would be wisest if you got your training and discovered just what it takes to fly a complex aircraft, discovered how many hours of experience you should build in simple aircraft before moving up to something that requires three thousand feet to operate from.
There are many aircraft that need only a few hundred feet to operate from and are just as happy on grass as pavement. At this stage I recomend that you go out and get your first introductory flight and see where it leads you. Dana |
