I have heard the same thing also but in different context. I heard the f-23 was far superior in stealth and all out speed, but the f-22 was much bettre in manuverability and easier to work on and develop it also has alot more room to add on some nifty toys. But I do like the looks of the f-23 better its a shame and we really dont need both aircraft for now anyway but I think it would have been cool to but half of each to fill the airforces void. That and my understanding was that the F-23 would have taken lonegr to develope where the f-22 is going into service next year and we already have 30 flying and pilots doing training, the earliest they could get an f-23 out was in 2008. Of course I wouldnt count it out yet the navy while the f-18 e/f is good it doesnt have the range the f-14's had so if the navy decides to challenge the outer barriers of their aircraft again look for them to seek a larger interceptor like the f-23 or the f-22 of course modified for carrier use and landings. Of course throw in the politicle factor and there you have it. The f-22 also had a slighter lonegr range than the f-23 but they tested the GE jets in the f-23 that could have been the cause I dont know what the range was on the one with the P&W f119.

I dont know if you have tried it or not but go into yahoo type in f-23 fighter jet or yf-23 and you should get some listings and a few pictures if the pages are still up and running. It was developed by northrop/grumman might try their web page...I like the looks of the F-23 it just looks like a kick butt aircraft...

The F-22 is awesome and I wont take anything away from it but if you read some articles on the F-23 it was also very agile while it didnt use thrust vectoring it used a better fly by wire system that seemed to be a big debeat in congress on which system was acually better. From what I read on one of the F-23 web pages (I cant remember it) but I will do some research and see if I can find the web page for you. The northrope/grumman team which designed it and also made the F-14 btw, was really put at a disadvantage they had to use an F-15E cockpit on it and had to use some make shift items around the engine housing on the prototypes where the heat comes out and it still beat the f-22 in stealth. The F-23 which was a good bit longer than the F-22 was faster and for quickly putting the prototypes together didnt lose by that much on agaility given the time I am not sure if the F-22 would have won or not that and I am sure some politics played into it. Its a matter of opinion on how dog fights are won the Russians well most anyway feel it will be won in close combat while most in the west and I do to with our tech advantage most dog fights will be won without the other aircraft even seeing their enemies. Dont get me wrong I like the F-22 and I believe nobody can match it but it would have been interesting to have seen the F-23 black Widow II get developed.

here I did a search on yahoo typing in yf-23 black widow II and here are some links I came up with and they have pictures.

1). http://www.fas.org/man/dod-101/sys/ac/f-23.htm

2). http://www.globalsecurity.org/milita...craft/f-23.htm (this is probably the best and most accurate on the specs and story of the F-23.

3).http://home.iae.nl/users/wbergmns/info/yf23.htm

4).http://blackwidowii.proboards6.com (discussion board) on
the f-23.
I was looking through the discussion board and someone mentioned that great britan looked at the f-23 at one time although I dont know how reliable it is, so it may get developed after all just for another country. hope this helps..I do stand corrected in a couple of things the F-23 did have a longer range and the GE engines seemed better for suited for supercruise than the pratt and witneys the f-23 was alot bigger than the f-22.
