Cool

Both, the USA and Russia, built superb airplanes, the case is that their design philosophy is very different. Take for example the F-4 and the Mig-21 and MiG-23. The F-4 was bigger, with more fuel capabilities, and more payload and range; the MiG´s are smaller, but, in case of the Flogger, faster and in case of the MiG-21 more manoeuverable. I have read in a magazine that german pilots from the former west Germany, that had the oportunity to fly the MiG-23, preferred them to the F-4, specially in terms of agility, speed, acceleration, power, and both planes very equal in terms of manoeuverability. The Phantoms, all the USA fighters, outnumbered the NVAF, more than 30 to one,so, it is no surprise they could mantein air superiority, furthermore, USA pilots were more experienced and better trained, but when the other guy know his aircraft too well dogfights were carry on, for example, the air duel between Lt. Randy Cunningham and RIO Willy Driscol, against the MiG-17 of Col Toon, or Tomb as mentioned sometimes!!!!!!!

it's actually a mistake to believe that the air battles above vietnam were against MiG21s. Most of the Vietnamese Airforce planes were MiG17 and MiG19, both second-line fighters in the '60s and '70s.

Russian planes were more agile than the US ones, but US has better rockets, so one on one I'd say F-4 would win over the MiG-21.
About nothing revolutionary. They were always trying to beat up America in some things, so they were doing everything so fast not going to details, and America was getting to to the some *SOME* things little slower than Russians, but doing the job great in every aspect, so it was easier for them to go forward, and while Russians fix those errors, America is far, far away to be beaten!
I think Russians don't have much chanses now.
FIGHTER!?! What about bomber (B-70 3Mach)? So Russians were scared, than lunching the project about interceptor that wasn't so great afterall.

Yes, the NVAF had more MiG-17 and 19, but even though, they were very effective, perhaps because of the ROE of that period for USA, for example, it was very difficult to fire and AIM-7 in that war, instead, in the 1GF, the Sparrows were more fired, again because of the ROE. Another thing, on Vietnam war, USA pilots had a lot of complaints with their AIM-9D/E, because they failed in many occassions, that was one reason for example, that not allow Mr Olds to became an ace in that war, in one combat he had to fire an average of two missiles per aircraft. In fact I think taht the AA-2 Atoll and the primitive Sidewinder were very equal.

The first Atoll and the first Sidewinder are identical. The Soviets got a sidewinder off a crashed aircraft and reversed enineered EXACTLY.

The Mig25 is so manuverable that it lost a dogfight with an EF-111 in desert storm. For those who might not be aware, if there are any, an EF-111 is an unarmed plane. It flew the Mig-25 into the ground.
