"Ladies and gentlemen, this is your Captain speaking,"
the seasoned airman of a transatlantic flight announced over the P.A., "We are having some trouble with one of our engines and we have had to shut it down. But there is nothing to worry about, this aircraft has four engines and we can make it to London on only three. There will be a one hour delay, though." A few minutes passed and a second engine had to be shut down. "We've had to shut down a second engine," the Captain announced, "But that won't be a problem - we are perfectly capable of making it to London on just two engines. But there will now be a two hour delay." Another couple of minutes past, and a third engine had to be shut down. The Captain was still calm and in control. "We've had to shut down a third engine, but that should not be a problem. As before, we will arrive in London three hours later than scheduled." Another few minutes, and the fourth and final engine had to be shut down. "Ladies and gentlemen," the Captain announced in a slightly exasperated tone, "We've had to shut down our fourth and final engine..." A passenger sitting in business class scoffed to the person next to him, "Humph...at this rate we're never going to get to London on time..." |
