answer to tomcat.

tomcat:
The pitot tube is used in conjunction with the static system on an aircraft to provide power and readings to flight instruments such as the Airspeed indicator. when you watch the needle move on the a/s indicator, it is being pushed by air entering the mouth of the pitot tube. This is why it is important to ensure that the tube and all your static ports are free from foreign matter and open to accept the air. As far as the placement of the tube, engineers try to place it in a position to achieve maximum airflow through it and so it will not interfere with the aerodynamics of the aircraft, which is significantly more important on an f-117 than on a cessna 172. Hope this helps, have a good one.
P.S. If you post in, say, the open board, your questions are more likely to be viewed and answered more speedily.

A good landing is one you can walk away from. A GREAT landing is when you can use the plane again tomorrow.
