Hi!
In February this year I flew from Benguela to Lubango in Angola with a military airplane. It was not part of any airline, because it was chartered from the military for a local football team!! There was a few military personal in the plane as well, apart from the many players, supporters and one jeep! Anyway. What I need to know is the model of this plane! This is what I remember: Car loaded from the back on two "lines", one for each wheel. E.g. not just one big flat thing...! Passengers went on in the front just behind cockpit on a narrow ladder. There was a big grid of windows below cockpit, facing down, forward and to the sides! In the cargo area (one big area, no seats) there where 2 or 4 small, circular-shaped windows There where warningsigns in russian language, why I'd label the plane as russian! What I dont remember clearly is wether it was a propeller or jet-plane (funny cuz i remember standing below the engine after landing, talking to a guy). I do remember the size was very big for me. But then I've never flewn in a cargo plane before! Would be very thankfull for any help to identify the possible aircraft! Maybe someone knows what planes the Angolan army have? THX! /CHEETAH |

Below is a link to a website, that I used to gather this information:
http://www.cbrnp.com/profiles/quarter4/angola.htm If you scroll down to the bottom there is an aircraft there - a CASA C-212 - a small cargo plane that sounds very similar to the one you described. The only other aircraft I could think of is the C-140 Hercules, but that sounds a little big. All the rest would be jet equipment and I think it's very unlikely you would have flown on a jet-powered aircraft (most likely was a prop plane). Hope this was in some way helpful.

Thanks a lot for your help! Now first of all I think that one is a bit too small. Remember it also has to be russian, or to have been flown in Russia before it was given to Angola, since it had Russian warning text all over inside! Secondly, the size of it was big enough to load into it about three big 4WD-trucks. Third, I remember that the engines where definitly turned on as I stepped onboard using a ladder to the door right behind the cockpit. The noise was as with a usual jetplane since I didn't think of it as anything unusual. Now would it have been possible to step onboard a propeller plane whilst the engines where turned on? And fourth, it had a big grid of windows down below cockpit in the front of the plane. Because of these four identifications, the most common idea I've recieved so far has been that it was a Ilyushin Il-76 (or maybe Il-78)! Now that does look a bit too big, besides I remember the grid of windows below the cockpit to be EVEN bigger, reaching almost all the way to the first door! But that might have been something I don't remember correctly! What do you think? Any other alternatives? Here is also a list of Angolas airplanes! |
