An illustrated book I have, detailing airliners between 1905 and 1930 has a few images of German aircraft from this period.

The earlier photos show the aircraft baring registrations like "D-2394" and "D-2053", but the later photos haev aircraft baring registrations like "D-AZUR" and "D-ADLR".

When was the change made from numbers to letters and why was this registration change made? Any information you have would be useful...

Today german Planes with any typ of engines have Letters as registration, classified by the wight. One-engine-prop with max. 3t (I think 3, perhaps only 1,5) has the Registration

D-Exxx

Motorgliders have

D-Kxxx

Helis

D-Hxxx and so on

The numbers are for the gliders.
