F-35 Lightning II Passes One More Test Flight
In early January, Lockheed Martin reported that the F-35 Lightning II successfully passed its second round of flight tests. The tests were conducted at the company’s facility in Fort Worth, Texas. The stealth fighter will eventually replace many of the aircraft, such as the A-10s, F/A-18 Hornets, F-16s, and AV-8B Harriers currently in service for the United States military. The F-35 Lightning II is also slated to replace the United Kingdom’s Sea Harriers and Harrier GR-7 aircraft.
Stephen Hawking to Venture into Space in 2009
British newspaper The Daily Telegraph reports that the renowned scientist and author Stephen Hawking has vowed to take a trip into space in 2009. Virgin Galactic will begin taking passengers into space on SpaceShipTwo beginning in 2008. Sir Richard Branson, the owner of Virgin Galactic has promised to waive the ticket fee of £100,000 for Hawking’s flight.
Cessna Considering New Light Sport Aircraft
Cessna has recently announced they’re considering producing a new light sport aircraft, similar to the now-retired 152. They plan to display a full-scale version of the aircraft at this year’s Experimental Aircraft Association convention in Oshkosh. Cessna hopes that feedback from attendees will help them decide whether to proceed with development of the new aircraft.
Standing Room Only for the Airbus?
Though Airbus representatives are denying it, reports have surfaced that the European-based aircraft company has been whispering in the ears of Asian carriers. Their secret? The idea of standing-room only for passengers in order to increase capacity, thereby stimulating profits. Passengers would be harnessed onto a vertical padded board. This would still conform to FAA regulations that each passenger be secured during takeoff and landing.
