Rare WWII Aircraft Due At Blaine Aviation Weekend
The most recent addition to the schedule for the Blaine Aviation Weekend has antique aircraft fans abuzz. Two incredibly rare warbirds are scheduled to take part in the festivities on Saturday morning when they will be making a stop at the aircraft fair. The Lockheed P-38L Lightning and Curtiss P-40K Warhawk have been recently restored and are more than up to the task of wowing crowds at the event.
New Plane Design for Mid-Air Refueling
The idea of refueling mid-flight is not a new one. Yet previously this task was left up to modified civilian aircraft that were kitted out for the task. Though the concept was used mainly in the military, it would seem that mid-air refueling has a number of practical applications for civilian aircraft.
Royal International Air Tattoo
The annual Royal International Air Tattoo is a popular family-orientated event that takes place at RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire. Not only is the air show the largest military air show in the world, but it is known as being one of the top outdoor family events in the United Kingdom. The event always takes place on the third weekend in July and much of the proceeds are used to support The Royal Air Force Charitable Trust.
Why the Aircraft Nuclear Propulsion Program was Abandoned
The concept of propelling aircraft with nuclear power is not a new one. In 1946 the United States Air Force launched the Nuclear Energy for the Propulsion of Aircraft (NEPA) program to further develop this concept. The program ran until 1961, when it was transferred to the Aircraft Nuclear Propulsion (ANP) program which was also run by the United States Air Force. Unfortunately the program did not last long enough to see the first test flight of this type of aircraft.
The Challenge of Manned Ornithopters
The idea of sculpting a flying machine based on the flapping mechanism used by birds is not a new one. Man has likely always dreamed of imitating the freedom that the flight of these birds would allow them. The ancient Greek legend of Daedalus and Icarus tells of how young Icarus sculpted wings of wax and feathers for himself in his pursuit of his dream of flight. But since the first successful flight of the Wright Brothers, the idea of designing an aircraft based on the exact same mechanisms of propulsion used by birds has been largely forgotten.
