New X2 Technology Progressing Well
Helicopters usually fall into two categories: good hover efficiency and low speed, or low hover efficiency and good speed. Up until now manufacturers and pilots have always had to choose between speed and hover performance when considering an aircraft that is capable of vertical flight. In addition to this, some of the larger, faster aircraft – such as Harriers, are very large and are built to carry a lot of weight so operational costs of such an aircraft are sky high.
Self-Repairing Aircraft a Possibility within Four Years
A recent breakthrough in biomimics could bring about self-repairing aircraft. The technique, which is being developed in Britain, essentially mimics the natural healing process found in plants and animals. Though still in the testing and development phase, if the new research is used it could have a lot of positive implications for the aeronautics industry.
Russian Superjet Enjoys Successful Maiden Flight
The mid-range Sukhoi Superjet 100 took off from Komsomolsk-on-Amur on May 19. This is the first civil aircraft to have been made in the new Russia and as such it has attracted a lot of attention. During the test flight, the SSJ100 managed to reach the launch flight mission height of 1 200 meters and the flight lasted a total of one hour, five minutes. The test flight provided the perfect opportunity for the pilot and test pilot to perform a number of maneuvers, which the Sukhoi passed with flying colors. At the end of the flight the crew was able to confirm various things such as the thrust-to-weight ratio of the aircraft and the fact that the engines and main systems were capable of sustained operation.
DA50 Magnum's First Test Flight
The airplane industry is abuzz with news of the first successful flight of the DA50 Magnum. This small aircraft took off on 14 May 2008 with Christian Dries as the pilot in command and Soeren Pedersen as chief test pilot. Dries is CEO and owner of the prestigious Diamond Aircraft Industries. The Austrian-based manufacturer specializes in the production of aircraft and motor gliders.
Aviation Goes ‘Green’ At Unveiling
These days ‘green’ is a big buzz word that is influencing virtually every sector of life. From housewives to musicians, everyone is looking for new ways to make less of an impact on an already struggling environment. The field of aviation is no different. The Science Museum in London recently unveiled a new exhibition focused on the eco-friendly future of aviation. The display will run for a period of six months.
